Howard Reed has been Director of Dubai Women's College (DWC) for 19 years. During this time Dubai has exploded onto the world scene and DWC has exploded onto the Dubai scene with over 4000 working graduates. All of DWC's graduates are UAE Nationals, and many of them are now in key positions in the most important organizations in Dubai. This revolution of working local women filled a void which is still common in many parts of the Arab world and is an essential part of the sustainable development equation for the UAE. Howard received a BSc from the University of South Dakota, an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD from the University of Washington. Both of his graduate degrees had an international focus and since then he has spent 12 years working in France, England, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden and Italy, before going to the UAE. Most of Howard's career has been as a professor or academic administrator however, he has also had valuable experience with the US Army, Ford Motor Corporation, Boeing Corporation, numerous consulting assignments and travel in most parts of the world. Howard is perhaps best known for his relentless focus on improving the quality of learning through creative use of technology, curriculum revitalization, faculty professional development, teamwork and industry and government partnerships. Haya Al Mutlaq Haya graduated from DWC in 1996 with a Higher Diploma in Business administration and in 1999 with a Bachelor in Business Applied Science. Since graduation she worked in initiating Dubai Business Channel part of Dubai TV and was Head of Research and Forward Planning. Then moved in initiating Sama TV; another channel in Dubai TV. She continued her education and graduated with Distinction in 2007 with a MSc degree in International Business and was awarded Sh. Rashid Award for Scientific achievement. She is one of the few UAE local teachers at Dubai Women’s College and at the same time manages this respected conference. She is looking forward to develop her teaching and leadership skills and aims to encourage more awareness of Insight Dubai conference and its objectives.
Originally qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Canada, Monica has been working in education for the past 19 years. She has a Masters in Education Technology and has recently completed a Doctorate in Education with a focus on Arabic Women’s Issues. She is an author of several journal articles and her research has been published as a book entitled Emirati Women in Dubai. Her involvement with this conference began in January, 2004 when she accompanied a group of Dubai Women’s College students to Prague as a chaperone. The tremendous benefits that were clearly gained by all of the participants in Prague made her want to create a similarly engaging experience in Dubai. Feedback from the annual conferences have proven that the intensive interactions between international women can change perceptions and form friendships for life. ![]() Linda Duncan, MQM Performance Improvement Coordinator Linda Duncan is the Performance Improvement Coordinator of Dubai Women’s College. As well as having extensive experience in developing and implementing service administration and quality systems, she is experienced in education and health management as well as research, with a strong background in developing and facilitating education and training programs related to Quality Management & Improvement Systems, Risk Management strategies and Clinical healthcare programs. Linda’s area of Academic instruction is Quality Management in Pharmacy. She is also an active member of the HCT Quality Improvement Advisory Committee. Linda has a Masters degree in Quality Management from Wollongong University, Australia and comes to DWC from a career in Quality Enhancement, Ministry of Health, UAE, which involved successful training as an ISO 9001:2000 Lead Auditor, with current registration on the International Register for Certified Auditors (IRCA) and several years as a Senior Assessor for the Dubai Quality Award, which is based on the Excellence Model used by the European Foundation for Quality Management. The Performance Improvement role and responsibilities during Insight Dubai are to ensure that the conference activities meet the objectives and that appropriate measurement tools are in place. ![]() Steve Terney Diploma Foundations faculty Steve Terney is a Foundations English teacher in his 19th year at DWC. A winner of the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Faculty and two Practicing the Future Awards for Learning Innovation, Steve previously taught English for Academic Purposes in DWC’s Health Sciences, Applied Communications and Business departments. Steve loves to travel and in 2005 chaperoned a student trip to Prague for the International Youth Leadership Conference. His wife is Turkish, and their daughter is in her third year at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
A dedicated, energetic and motivated educator, Nancy Maloney has been working as a business instructor at Dubai Women’s College since 2003. She holds an MBA from Leicester University, UK. Her academic and community interests include IT supported education, organizational management, corporate social responsibility and the empowerment of women in all sectors of society.
Candy completed a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and History in 1989, later going on to do a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (in TESOL and Social Sciences) in 1992 after spending some time traveling and working in Africa and Europe. She completed a Master of Education (in Applied Linguistics) by coursework and thesis at the University of Western Australia in 2003. Her thesis examined issues of test validity. Candy began her teaching career in Perth, Western Australia, where she worked at a large private language college for five years. During this time, Candy was promoted to Senior Teacher and was actively involved in the co-ordination of Cambridge Examination Preparation Courses, Curriculum Design and Teacher Training. In 1998, she took up a position as Director of Studies at International House in Kiev, Ukraine. After two years in this position, she joined the British Council, Kiev, as Project Manager for the Peacekeeping English Project, a UK Ministry of Defence and Foreign Office funded project aimed at providing English language training for the Ukrainian armed forces. Returning to Australia in 2003, Candy worked as Director of Studies at the International Language Centre of Notre Dame University in Fremantle, Western Australia. Candy joined Dubai Women’s College in 2004 and is a member of the Business Faculty, teaching English and Arab History. In her spare time, Candy enjoys reading, entertaining and practicing her Russian. She also paints and plays the piano.
Originally from Sri Lanka, Enid has been an important staff member of the college for many years. She is responsible for the logistics of the Insight Dubai conference from airport pickups, visas and transportation to organizing meals and booking social events. Although she is behind the scenes, her role is critical to the success of the conference. She enjoys working with young women from around the world and feels passionate about the issue of global awareness.
Born and raised in South Australia, I went to high school in Adelaide and after graduating studied Hospitality Management. I worked in hospitality for 20 years, all around Australia, including 4 years of teaching at the Blue Mountain International Hotel Management School in the beautiful Blue Mountains in New South Wales. In 1998 I returned to study Visual Communication at the University of South Australia. After graduating with Honors I set up my own freelance design studio, while also lecturing at University in Visual Communications. In 2006 I arrived in Dubai to teach Graphic Design in the Applied Communications Department at Dubai Women’s College.
Robin Bishop joined the Insight Dubai committee in 2009. She holds a Masters of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Brunswick. She joined Dubai Women’s College in 2006 and is currently the Library Supervisor. Robin is passionate about sharing information tools with students and staff that empower them to fulfill their information needs. She feels fortunate to be working with a team whose main objective is helping young UAE nationals become more information literate. Prior to working in the UAE, Robin has worked in San Francisco as a Library Training Consultant for a library software vendor, Seattle as a trainer and project Coordinator for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Charlottesville at the University of Virginia as an Education Librarian and in Japan as an English teacher.
Maureen began her career as an English Language instructor in Spain before moving to Dubai. She has been a faculty member of Dubai Women’s College since 1992 and is currently providing English Language support to Pharmacy students in the Health Science Department. In 2009 Maureen worked “behind the scenes” encouraging Pharmacy students to participate in Insight Dubai and is delighted to be taking a more active role this year as a member of the Organizing Committee of this important and exciting conference.
Jean Linehan has been teaching ESL in a variety of settings for over 25 years, the last four of which have been at DWC. She calls Charlotte, NC home, but has lived in many different places. She received her BA in Modern Languages from Texas A& M University and an MA in International Education from The George Washington University. Although this is her first year to officially help out with the Insight Dubai Conference, she has met and chatted with many of the participants in the previous years’ programs. They were always so engaged in and excited about everything they were doing at Insight Dubai, that Jean decided she had to come be a part of it.
Yasemin Altas is an English Faculty in the Business department. She’s been with HCT for almost four years, two of which she spent in Ras Al Khaimah, another Emirate in the UAE . She was born I and grew up in Germany, where she went to school, but did her university degree in Turkey. She did a double major in Foreign Language Education at Middle East Technical University in Ankara and got her BA in English Language Teaching as well as German. She holds an MA in Management in Education from Bilkent University as well as a diploma of Teaching English to Adults (DELTA) from Cambridge University. She recently became a Cambridge-certified Teacher Trainer. Her interests are testing, material design and evaluation. Besides teaching, Yasemin is into drama and has been an active member of the Dubai Drama Club. She loves theater, Tango, travelling and outdoor sports. She is fascinated by ethnic cultures as well the psychology of human behavior. Insight Dubai , she believes, is a great opportunity for all participants to learn, share and grow together.
Dr. Ces (the name on the passport is Cesarettin Koc) is a mathematics educator holding Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Science, MSc and PhD in Mathematics. After teaching in Turkey and Australia, he has been in the UAE for 15 years. He published a few article in abstract mathematics. He also teaches in a Master program in Strathclyde University. He is a member of editors’ team editing a text book taught in master level in Management Sciences. He helped Insight Dubai team voluntarily many years. He is happy to become a member of the Organizing Committee this year.
Rana holds an MEd degree in TESOL from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne 2002. She is also a Personality Dimensions facilitator. Rana has lived and worked in Canada and several countries around the Middle East including Kuwait, Syria and Egypt. Rana has been living and working in the UAE for 12 years, 7 of which have been at DWC. After teaching Diploma students for two years, Rana transferred to the Education Department where she is currently training Emirati women to be teachers in the Early Childhood sector. Rana is keenly interested in people and strongly believes in the values of tolerance and understanding between cultures. She enjoys participating in conferences and has led the Education department’s booth to win the Award of Excellence during the annual Bazaar in the category of Bazaar Service Excellence for the past 2 years.
My name is Fraser MacDonald and I am Scottish. I have a background in independent film. I studied Television and Radio Production at Telford College in Edinburgh. After graduation I worked on many short films whilst also working as a film distributer. In 1997 I applied for a job in Abu Dhabi and moved to the UAE to start working in a small media production department making multimedia learning materials for use in ESL training. Later, after a year based in the faculty of Education of the University of Edinburgh, I returned to the UAE to work in the Applied Communications department here at DWC. In AppComm, I’m responsible for maintaining facilities and equipment allowing our students to work in Journalism, Video Production, Radio and Graphic Design. I am responsible for providing technical and logistical support to our students and faculty, through workshops, editing tuition and preparing labs and studios. I really enjoy working with our students and am fortunate to work somewhere where literally everyday brings something new and unexpected.
With over 9 years working experience in Journalism, Public Relations and Corporate Communications, Abrar is responsible for all Corporate Communications planning and executing functions. For the past year, she worked on maintaining consistent communication and ongoing media coverage for DWC. This included developing media strategy for the college, utilizing the media to leverage the messaging platform communications strategy and building media relations for the college in the UAE.
Dezzil achieved her BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) degree from the Mangalore University, India in June 2005. She worked for a lubricant manufacturing company prior to joining DWC. She joined DWC in August 2008 and provides administrative support to the Chair and Faculty of Business Department. She is responsible for the name tags, certificates and gifts for the Conference.
Alia graduated with a Higher Diploma in E-Business Management from Dubai Women’s College in 2008, and Bachelor of Science in General Business Management in 2010 within the same college. She has been awarded several times for her outstanding academic achievement. Alia is now working at Emirates NBD as an Assistant Manager Investments at the Private Banking. She is currently doing her Executive MBA in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, also she is preparing for CISI International Investment Management Certificate. Additionally, her interest in designing websites has qualified her to become the webmaster of the Insight Dubai Conference. |
