Advising at DWCAcademic advising is an important component of all teaching activities at DWC. It is not personal counselling. All Teaching faculty are assigned advisees from the year and program in which they are teaching. The goals of the advising program are to help students (1) adjust to College life; (2) achieve personal goals through connecting to the “self”; and (3) achieve career and life goals. Advisers address these goals by engaging their advisees in relationships characterized by empathic listening and supportive problem solving. By virtue of these relationships, advisers know their advisees better than any other person in the College. They provide invaluable information about students in times of celebration (e.g. the granting of student awards) and/or during difficult times (e.g. when students are experiencing academic difficulties). There are student counsellors for students who are having personal difficulties outside their academic area. Academic advisers do not work alone in helping students make academic, personal and career choices. When possible, new faculty are teamed up with a more experienced DWC adviser Academic advisers also have access to other College resources such as Student Services counselors, Career counselors in the Career Center, work placement coordinators, academic supervisors, and the College Director. Advising is a planned teaching activity that takes place in a variety of settings including ,but not restricted to, individual adviser/advisee appointments and small group settings.
